"Runners need quality foods that provide a 'spark plug' for their energy," says Nancy Clark, RD, MS, and author of The Food Guide for Marathoners. These seven "elite" foods for runners will help you feel your best -- and keep you up and running.
· Small bagel with peanut butter
If you're a morning runner, you know it can be tough to hit the road on an empty stomach. It's been several hours since your last meal the night before, and your energy stores are low. Eating a 100- to 300-calorie snack before your morning run can give you energy and staying power, says Clark. This quick-and-easy snack has carbs and protein, plus it's easy to digest.
· Bananas
If you need a carb-packed energy-booster before an afternoon run, it's hard to go wrong with a banana. A bonus: Bananas contain loads of potassium, which regulates blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke.
· Berries
Your legs can take a pounding from high-impact activities like running; soreness you feel after a hard run may be caused by micro-tears in the exercised muscles. That's why, in addition to their high fiber content, berries are a good option for runners. The vitamin C and potassium they contain help the body repair itself.
· Broccoli
This nutritional powerhouse has Vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and phytochemicals, all key for peak performance and health, says Clark.
· Low-fat yogurt
Running and other weight-bearing exercise can help you improve your bone density. But calcium is an essential part of the equation, and many runners don't get enough. One cup of yogurt contains a third of your recommended daily intake of calcium. Plus, yogurt has protein -- important for building muscle and recovering from tough workouts.
· Lean beef
In addition to being a quality protein source, beef is high in iron, an especially important element for runners. (Iron deficiency can lead to fatigue.) For vegetarians, beans, peas, green leafy vegetables, and iron-fortified cereals are good sources of iron.
· Wild Salmon
For the past ten years I have worked as a Teacher’s Aide in a private school for students with learning disabilities and autism. I have come to realize the great admiration I feel for the parents of autistic children, and the children themselves. I have always wanted to do something to show my support of them. As a result, I raised over $2600 and ran the

Oh no. So sorry to hear this. Prayers to you and your family.
I just now realized that it is Rick that passed away. I was thinking it was Rick's dad. I'm heartbroken. Rick offered me lots of advice last year when I was training for races and then when I was injured. I'm going to miss his encouraging words of wisdom.
My first half marathon on 10/17 is dedicated to him.
Rest in peace Rick.
Rick,
I can't believe this is true. You have filled our lives with laughter, hope and inspiration. Every post left us all giggling and I was just waiting to see you and your wife again in NYC in November. I just can't believe this.
Thanks for being such a wonderful human being. The blogging World will never be the same. We will miss you. Hugs and prayers to your family.
Love,

I was a recent follower but was really inspired by Rick and was always entertained by his posts. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to say I'm glad that he passed away doing something he loved, but I really hope that it works that way for me. I'll wear a ponytail on my next run for him! So sorry for your family's loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
I am so sad to read this news. My prayers are for your family. May Rick rest in peace.

I am in shock. Rick left one of my first comments. Not sure how he found my blog or maybe I found his first.
Praying for everyone.
I am so heartbroken to hear this, my condolences to your family... I was in shock for a few minutes when I read this...
Rick was a great man and definitely made us all laugh, he will be missed!
Words cannot describe how much it saddens me to hear this news. Rick has given me so many laughs and wonderful memories. He was always so supportive and protective of me . . . I had no doubt he would be there in a heartbeat if I ever needed help. He was honestly one of the most loving, giving and compassionate people I have ever been lucky enough to have "known". The blog world (and the world, in general) just won't be the same without him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you all during this difficult time. Rick will be deeply missed.

So sorry to hear this. Rick was one of my very first "followers" with my running blog. And I always loved his comments. He will be missed!
I am so saddened to hear about your loss. Rick seemed like an incredible husband, father, friend and human being in general. He was my first follower and very supportive of me when I had no idea how this whole "blog thing" worked. I was really looking forward to meeting him at a race one day. I hope the memories you have of him help you to get through this difficult time. I will miss his posts and his support greatly.
I went to HS with Rick and am saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. - Mary(Ellen) Raskopf-Kawauchi
Rick took me under his wing when I was hospitalized back in May. He flooded me with support to an extent I could never re-pay. I am thankful to have had the pleasure to know him.
